Our ongoing program of staged readings. New works by local playwrights are put up in a casual setting, with the goal of exposure and networking, but most importantly, fun!

The deadline for submissions to be included in our September 5th One Night Stand is August 18th. Any pieces submitted after that will be held for consideration during our next season.
Big news: 1NS has changed its format to an evening contest. Playwrights who submit and are accepted will be entered into the voting pool with all the other pieces. The audience will vote on their favorite piece, and the winner will have an opportunity to be commissioned by Just ASK to write a one-act for next year’s “Anyone for a Swingin’ Threesome?” We already had our first two winners and we’re looking for just one more. Start submitting TODAY!
What We’re Looking For:
- 8-10 minute short, humorous pieces. We find short sketch-like pieces work best, as opposed to dramas or monologues.
- Actors to perform in said pieces!
- Musicians or variety acts (stand-up, poetry, flame-thrower-juggling, etc.) - keep set-up simple! You will only have about 1 minute to set up / take down.
The requirements are as follows:
Playwrights:
- Please submit your piece* digitally (Microsoft Word .doc format is preferable) with a run-time of 8 minutes or shorter (no piece above 8 minutes will be considered).
- You must be able to both attend the event and direct your own piece. If you REALLY want to be involved and it is impossible for you to direct/attend, let us know, but this is unlikely at best.
- We will cast your piece for you from the pool of actors who submit UNLESS you tell us not to. In your email, please specify if you have your own cast or not! This is crucial!!
- A $10 acceptance fee is asked of the writer(s) upon selection of the piece. This can be brought to the bar the night of in cash or check (no cards, please)
Your piece will not be considered if you do not provide us with the information listed above
Actors:
- Please submit a headshot and resume if you’d like to be considered for a part
- Not all actors will be used; it will be based on the number and types of roles that are present in the selected scripts.
*Just ASK is a group dedicated to promoting original works and maintaining artistic integrity. All submissions remain the author’s own intellectual property. We will contact the author if we wish to put the work up in an event of ours and will not do anything with the work unless we receive their expressed permission. We encourage all playwrights to copyright their work as they will be performed in a public space.
